Plague is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The history of plague epidemics dates back many centuries, and the most famous were the Pandemic of Justinian in the VI century, the Black Death in the XIV century and the later epidemics in the XIX–XX centuries. The Black Death, which began in Europe in the middle of the 14th century, claimed the lives of millions of people, destroying the social and economic structures of that time.
